boor: boor: [15] Boor was borrowed into English either from Low German hūr or from Dutch boer (Boer ‘Dutch colonist in South Africa’ is a later, 19thcentury borrowing). When first acquired it meant ‘peasant farmer’, and did not develop its modern explicit connotations of coarseness and rudeness until the 16th century.
